All of Fusions automatic butt fusion machines operate a failsafe system that guarantees an open-close time of less than 3 seconds. This ensures a minimum heat loss at the joining surface. A typical rate of heat loss is 6°C per second and therefore delay in bringing the heated pipe ends together can have a serious effect on joint integrity.
However, with a maximum dwell time of 3 seconds it is possible to ensure good joints and increase productivity. Less heat loss means there is less need to 'overheat' the pipe prior to joining and with less heat input the cooling time can be reduced. Hence, more joints per hour. Obviously any change to accepted procedures must be agreed by all parties and therefore Fusion has worked very closely with utilities and technical bodies to validate all technical information. The addition of a fast-clamping system has reduced jointing time even further.
The consequence of this work is an optional 'FASTweld' programme available to all customers. |
